National Sheepdog Trials set for Llandeilo

Some of the best sheepdogs and their handlers in Wales will soon be competing at a major event in Carmarthenshire.

The 2019 Welsh National Sheepdog Trials is being held from Friday August 2 to Sunday August 4 at Dinefwr Park in Llandeilo.

A sheepdog trial is a competitive sport where herding dogs move sheep around a field, fences, gates or enclosures, as directed by their handlers.

Well-known for featuring on the ‘One Man and His Dog’ BBC TV programme, sheepdog trial events are particularly associated with hill farming areas on largely unfenced land.

The 2019 Welsh National Sheepdog Trials is being supported by Carmarthenshire County Council.

Cllr Peter Hughes-Griffiths, Executive Board Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said: “We’re rightly very proud of our rural heritage in Carmarthenshire, so it’s very fitting that the National Sheepdog Trials are being held in the county.

“Helping celebrate a much-loved feature of agricultural life, the family-friendly event will combine the excitement of the sheepdog trials with a huge number of stalls that will showcase local craft and food businesses.

“Held at the stunning Dinefwr Park in Llandeilo owned by the National Trust, we are delighted to assist with the staging of this trial and other activities thorough our event support fund.”

More than 80 stalls will be available throughout the event, giving visitors the chance to discover a huge variety of produce from across Carmarthenshire and beyond.

Meirion Owen, Chairman of the 2019 Welsh National Sheepdog Trials, said: “We are delighted to bring the 2019 national trials to Llandeilo and Carmarthenshire, giving an opportunity to showcase the wonderful area and talent we have here in Wales.

“Our focus for the weekend has also been to create a great family day out with the craft and food festival, encouraging people to attend and hopefully experience the excitement of the sheepdog trials for the first time.”

Tickets are £8 per day for adults, with free entry for children under 16.
