Skills Hub creations set to inspire Wales squad ahead of international fixture

A talented young artist from Carmarthenshire has enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime experience after being invited to present the Wales Women's National Team with a series of handcrafted gifts celebrating their achievements and Welsh identity.

Nia, who attends the Skills Hub in Cross Hands, created a collection of bespoke pottery Welsh Ladies wearing the now iconic Welsh football bucket hat. Each piece was individually designed and painted to represent a member of the Wales Women's squad and coaching team.

A passionate supporter of both Arsenal Women and the Wales Women's National Team, Nia has travelled across the country to cheer on Wales and was inspired following the team's historic qualification for a major international tournament.

The idea for the unique creations began when Nia suggested combining the traditional Welsh Lady with the distinctive bucket hats that have become synonymous with Welsh football support.

Working alongside Sarah, Skills Hub Development Officer, Nia transformed her idea into a meaningful piece of pottery. Every item was handcrafted and painted at the Skills Hub workshop in Cross Hands, a specialist service supporting individuals with disabilities and mental health conditions.

The project gathered momentum when local Wales international Ffion Morgan visited the Skills Hub, where Nia proudly presented her with a personalised Welsh Lady. Following the success of that visit, Nia went on to create personalised figures for the entire Wales squad and coaching staff.

Earlier this week, Nia personally presented the collection to players and staff.

Carmarthenshire County Council's Cabinet Member for Integrated Health and Children and Adult Social Services, Cllr Jane Tremlett said:

"We are incredibly proud of Nia and her achievement. Her creativity and passion for football have produced something truly special that celebrates both Welsh heritage and support for our national team. Nia's story highlights the fantastic opportunities provided through the Skills Hub, and we wish Wales the very best for tonight's match."

A representative from Cymru Women’s National team commented:

“From everyone involved in the Cymru Women’s National Team we would like to say a huge diolch to Nia for visiting our training session with her mother and sister today, and for arranging such thoughtful gifts for Rhian and the players. Nia’s effort into creating the gifts really resonated with the team and everyone really appreciated the hours of work to create them at the Skills Hub in Cross Hands. We also really appreciate Nia’s support for the team over the years, and we hope she had an incredible experience today that will live long in the memory”.

The match takes place tonight (13 October), with kick-off at 7.15pm at Parc y Scarlets, bringing another major sporting occasion to Carmarthenshire.
