Carmarthenshire County Council is inviting expressions of interest for Chairperson of the new Llanelli Neighbourhood Board, following Llanelli’s inclusion in the UK Government’s Pride in Place Programme.
Focussed on a specific geographical segment of Llanelli, the area has been selected for this long‑term regeneration and community empowerment programme, which will provide up to £20 million of investment over 10 years. The funding will support transformational, community‑led projects that build pride, opportunity and long‑term resilience in the area.
The Chairperson will play a pivotal role in shaping the impact of the Pride in Place Programme which includes: appointing and leading the Neighbourhood Board; providing clear, inclusive and transparent leadership, working constructively with Carmarthenshire County Council and ensuring that decisions are community led, fair and aligned with local needs.
The Neighbourhood Board will bring together residents, local businesses, grassroots organisations and elected representatives to make decisions on how funding is invested, ensuring it reflects local priorities and delivers lasting impact.
The Board will guide investment into initiatives including:
- High street renewal and streetscape improvements
- Safer, greener and more welcoming public spaces
- Play, cultural and community facilities
- Community‑led housing and asset ownership
- Social enterprises and co‑operative businesses
Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Leisure, Culture and Tourism, Cllr Hazel Evans, said:
“I’m delighted that areas of Llanelli will benefit from the Pride in Place programme, with Carmarthenshire County Council officers supporting the community who will be leading on these investments set to provide a wide range of benefits to the local area.
Due to the flexible and long term nature of the programme, this will enable communities to respond to changing needs and ensure that any investment provides maximum benefit to the community.”
Dame Nia Griffith MP, said:
“This Pride in Place programme is a real opportunity for us to come together as a community and for everyone who lives or works in or near the town centre, or who comes into town or who would like to have more reason to come into town, to have their say about how they would like to improve Llanelli, and help us shape a plan for the next ten years. We will shortly be coming to you with more detail about getting involved. In the meantime, please think who we might encourage to take on the challenging role of Chairperson...not a politician or a 'usual suspect'…someone with drive and enthusiasm for Llanelli whom we can all unite behind, and please encourage them to put their name forward."
