Council proceeds to statutory notice to discontinue Ysgol Meidrim and Ysgol Y Fro

Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet has agreed to issue a statutory notice to close Ysgol Meidrim and Ysgol Y Fro following a consultation period with both school communities.
The statutory notice period will begin in June 2026.
This decision follows a formal consultation period with pupils, teachers, parents, governors and the wider community surrounding both schools from 16 January to 2 March 2026.
Both schools have been identified based on criteria set out within the Modernising Education Programme, approved by Cabinet on 18 November 2024:
- Extremely low pupil numbers at each school
- High surplus places
- High number of pupils living within catchment are attending other schools
- Pupil projections suggest that there is little likelihood of pupil numbers increasing dramatically over the next few years
- Deficit budget or projected deficit budget within the next financial year resulting in unsustainable financial situation
Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Cllr Glynog Davies, said:
“Today’s difficult decision to issue statutory notices to discontinue both Ysgol Meidrim and Ysgol Y Fro has not been taken lightly. However, significant financial pressures and low pupil numbers with a high surplus of places in both schools has forced Cabinet to come to this conclusion.”
