Carmarthenshire celebrates Wales’ historic qualification for UEFA Women’s EURO 2025

Carmarthenshire County Council is hosting a national celebration today as the Giant Cymru Shirt arrives in Guildhall Square, Carmarthen — part of the FAW’s ‘Ein Crys Cymru’ Tour, marking Wales' historic qualification for UEFA Women’s EURO 2025. The event is open until 7pm this evening, with local residents, schools, and football fans encouraged to join the festivities and show their support for the national women’s team.

The 4-metre tall inflatable shirt is a bold and unmissable symbol of Welsh pride, featuring the words “EWRO 2025”, the group stage fixtures on the front, and the full official squad list on the back — unveiled last week at the summit of Yr Wyddfa to launch the nationwide tour.

Carmarthenshire County Council Leader, Cllr Darren Price, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Leisure, Culture and Tourism, Cllr Hazel Evans, and Cllr Glynog Davies, Cabinet Member for Education and Welsh Language, were among those in attendance earlier today to show their support and pose for photos beside the shirt.

Carmarthenshire County Council Leader, Cllr Darren Price, said:

This is a proud day for Carmarthenshire and a powerful celebration of how far women's football in Wales has come. The ‘Ein Crys Cymru’ stands for more than just sport, it represents identity, recognition, and real progress. We’re honoured to host it here in Carmarthen and stand behind our national team.”

The ‘Ein Crys Cymru’ tour honours the Cymru women’s team’s higher purpose: “To play for change. To play to inspire. For Us. For Them. For Her”. It reflects the journey from borrowed men’s kits in the team’s early days to having players’ names proudly displayed on their own shirts, a milestone only achieved in 2019.

As part of today’s celebrations, local primary schools and girls’ football clubs visited the square throughout the morning and early afternoon, enjoying football-themed activities, team photos with the shirt, and the chance to record good luck messages to the players.

Visitors can also collect a free EWRO 2025 wall planner at the event, helping them follow Wales’ journey through the tournament, which kicks off on 5 July in Lucerne against the Netherlands.

The tour will continue visiting towns and cities across Wales before concluding in Cardiff on the day of the opening match.

Adding special significance to the event is the presence of Carmarthenshire’s own Ffion Morgan in the national squad. Born in Llandeilo, Ffion’s football journey began on the grassroots pitches of Carmarthenshire with Saron Juniors and Ammanford Girls, and now proudly represents Wales and Bristol City.

To celebrate her achievements and honour her place in Welsh sporting history, Ffion’s official Wales jersey is now on display at Parc Howard Museum in Llanelli. The shirt forms part of the museum’s Smashing Boundaries exhibition, which runs until 19 October 2025 and celebrates trailblazing women in sport.

Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Leisure, Culture and Tourism, Cllr Hazel Evans said:

Ffion is a fantastic role model for young people across Carmarthenshire. Her inclusion in the national squad makes this moment even more meaningful for our local communities.”
