Statement on Carway Community Primary School
6 days ago
In collaboration with Carmarthenshire County Council, the Governing Body of the Federation of Carway, Gwynfryn and Ponthenri has, on the advice of the Local Authority, taken the necessary decision not to reopen Carway CP School for the start of the new term in September.
This difficult yet necessary decision has been taken in light of the Council receiving structural advice for the Block Three section of the school estate.
As part of the Council’s ongoing monitoring programme of its estate of buildings, a condition survey of the Carway School estate took place which identified the need to undertake a further structural investigation of Block Three which was done during the summer holidays, when the building and school site were vacant.
Following the investigation, the Council has received advice that this further assessment could not provide the necessary assurances regarding the building's integrity and hence its safety for occupation.
Over the coming weeks, the Council will be carrying out further work to establish what should be done with the defective building.
The immediate priority is the safety and well-being of pupils and staff. Arrangements are being made to ensure that education and learning are uninterrupted, with every pupil accommodated at Gwynfryn School for the start of the new term in September.
This decision has been made solely to ensure the absolute safety of pupils and staff.
Work is ongoing to identify suitable provision for children attending Cylch Meithrin, with more information provided to parents as soon as possible.
Further information for parents can be found on the Council’s website.
