Essential emergency road closure planned on B4310 south of Felingwm Isaf

An essential emergency road closure will take place on the B4310 south of Felingwm Isaf to allow critical safety works to be carried out.

Due to delays caused by recent weather conditions, the road closure will now begin on Monday 12 January 2026 and is expected to remain in place for approximately eight weeks.

A recent inspection of the road embankment identified a serious safety issue affecting the structure that supports the highway. If left untreated, the condition of the embankment could worsen and pose a risk to road users. To address this, essential repairs are required to stabilise the area and protect the long-term safety of the road. The works will include the construction of a 160-metre retaining wall along the affected section.

Due to recent adverse weather conditions, including snow and ice, planned highway works were temporarily paused while urgent issues across the wider road network were addressed. As a result, the start of this closure has been delayed by one week.

To help reduce disruption for local residents and businesses, the road will be closed during the working week but will re-open from 3:30pm on Fridays until 8:00am on Mondays throughout the duration of the works.

A signed diversion route suitable for all vehicles, including HGVs, will be in place. Arrangements for school transport have been shared with schools and bus operators to ensure pupils can continue to travel safely during the closure.

In response to feedback from local businesses, “Business Open as Usual” signage has been installed and access will be maintained wherever possible. Keeping the road open at weekends is intended to support local trade during the works.

Further updates will be shared through the Council’s communication channels, along with a set of frequently asked questions to provide additional information for residents, businesses and road users.

Following a geotechnical assessment of the road embankment along the B4310 south of Felingwm Isaf, a safety-critical defect has been identified. The embankment provides structural support to the road, and damage to it means the highway could become unsafe if no action is taken.

To address this, urgent repair works are required to stabilise the embankment and protect the long-term safety of the road. The proposed works involve constructing a 160-metre retaining wall, along with associated ground and drainage works.

All works are being carried out in line with Safe System of Work regulations. The closure is expected to remain in place for approximately eight weeks to ensure the works can be completed safely and efficiently.

The location of the works is very restricted, with limited space available between the road and a steep embankment. There is not enough room for workers, machinery, or materials to operate safely while traffic remains in use.

Large machinery and concrete deliveries are required for the retaining wall, and these cannot be positioned or unloaded safely without closing the road. A full closure is therefore necessary to protect both the workforce and road users.

While alternative routes suitable for cars and smaller vehicles exist, the official diversion must be suitable for all vehicles, including HGVs.

The signed diversion route for south-west bound traffic will be to travel north and north-east along the B4310 through Abergorlech to its junction with the B4337. From there, turn right and continue south-east and then south along the B4337 to its junction with the A40. At the junction, turn right and continue south-west along the A40 to the roundabout. At the roundabout, take the third exit and continue along the A40 through Broad Oak and Llanegwad to its junction with the B4310. Turn right to rejoin the B4310 south of the closure.

The same route will apply in reverse for northbound traffic.

Clear signage will be in place throughout the diversion.

The following arrangements have been shared with schools and bus operators:

  • The C07 service will operate using a smaller midi-coach from Abergorlech to Felingwm Isaf and will divert via Pontargothi to Bro Myrddin and QEH. A second midi-coach will start from Nantgaredig (opposite Plas y Pant) and operate via Nantgaredig and Capel Dewi to Bro Myrddin and QEH.
  • The H37 service from Abergorlech to Nantgaredig Primary School will operate to Felingwm Isaf as normal and divert via Pontargothi.

In response to feedback from local businesses and residents, the road will re-open each weekend, from 3:30pm on Fridays until 8:00am on Mondays, throughout the works. This is intended to support weekend trading and reduce disruption.

“Business Open as Usual” signs have been installed, and access will be maintained wherever possible. The works will also help protect long-term access to local businesses and properties by improving the safety and stability of the road.
