Statement on Ysgol Heol Goffa – 9 July
Following a meeting between Carmarthenshire County Council and Ysgol Heol Goffa’s Board of Governors today, 9 July 2024, a commitment has been made to work collaboratively to develop a plan to provide the very best facilities for all Additional Learning Needs (ALN) pupils in Llanelli.
With the needs of Ysgol Heol Goffa pupils first and foremost in everyone’s minds, an independent review of the current ALN specialist provision in Llanelli will commence during the next school term, autumn 2024. That review will take on board the views of learners, parents, staff, governors and wider stakeholders. Any future proposals that will be developed, following the independent review, will be subject to a full public consultation at the appropriate time.
The Leader of Carmarthenshire County Council, Cllr. Darren Price said:
I am pleased that both the County Council and Ysgol Heol Goffa’s Board of Governors have agreed to work collaboratively in understanding the needs of delivering specialist provision for pupils with ALN in Llanelli.
I appreciate the last few months have been difficult, since the decision was taken in May not to continue with the plans to build a new special school due to significantly increased costs. Whilst we cannot continue with these particular plans, I would like to stress that no decision has been made to close the current school.
I would like to reiterate and reassure parents that we are deeply committed to ensuring that every pupil will continue to receive the very best education.”
The Headteacher of Ysgol Heol Goffa, Miss Ceri Hopkins said:
The school community are looking forward to working collaboratively with the local authority to ensure that the most vulnerable learners have access to the very best resources, provision and education they so very much deserve. We look forward to the opportunity to ensuring that the voices of all stakeholders are heard and considered. The staff remain committed to delivering the very best education, care and life skills and would like to thank the wider community for their support to our pupils and staff.”
