Ysgol Parc Y Tywyn has been named the Llanelli area winner of the Carmarthenshire Libraries Schools Shield after recording the highest percentage of pupils signed up to this year's Summer Reading Challenge.
To recognise the school's achievement, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Leisure, Culture and Tourism, Cllr Hazel Evans, recently presented the shield to two Ysgol Parc Y Tywyn pupils who took part in the challenge.
The school's success comes in a year when more than 1,000 children across Carmarthenshire participated in the Summer Reading Challenge, collectively reading more than 8,000 books during the summer holidays.
Delivered through Carmarthenshire Libraries, the annual national initiative encourages children to continue reading over the summer and helps inspire a lifelong love of books and learning.
Carmarthenshire County Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Leisure, Culture and Tourism, Cllr Hazel Evans said:
Congratulations to everyone at Ysgol Parc Y Tywyn on this fantastic achievement. The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children to discover the enjoyment of reading while helping them maintain and develop their literacy skills over the school holidays. It is wonderful to see so many young people across Carmarthenshire taking part, and I am delighted to see Ysgol Parc Y Tywyn recognised for its enthusiasm and commitment."
Other area winners were Laugharne V.C.P. School, which claimed the Carmarthen Schools Shield, and Ysgol Ffairfach, which won the Ammanford Schools Shield.
