A successful community event took place at Canolfan Pentre Awel on 14 May, bringing together local organisations and 40 school children to raise awareness of life saving bleed packs that can be used in major incidents to stop or control bleeding before emergency services arrive.
During the event, pupils and staff from participating schools attended practical demonstrations showing how bleed packs can be used to control severe bleeding in emergency situations. The sessions focused on building confidence, improving awareness, and highlighting the importance of early intervention before emergency services arrive.
As part of the initiative, each school received a free bleed pack to take back to their premises. These packs can be refilled free of charge, ensuring schools are able to keep them fully stocked and ready for use without additional cost.
The event demonstrated a strong commitment to community safety and education, helping to equip young people and school staff with vital knowledge and skills that could save lives.
Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Integrated Health and Children and Adult Social Services, Cllr Jane Tremlett said:
Bleed packs are a vital tool that can be used in the moments before emergency services arrive. By educating our young people about how and when to use them, we are not only improving safety in our community but also empowering the next generation with the confidence and skills to act in an emergency. Initiatives like this help build safer, more resilient communities across the county
Organisers said the event marked an important step in increasing awareness of bleed packs across the area and hoped it would encourage further engagement from schools and organisations in the future.
Cllr Rob Evans, Member for Dafen and Felinfoel, who organised the event added:
Due to the kind donation by a local businessman in Llanelli we have managed to secure the roll out of serious bleed kits to Primary schools in and around Llanelli. The aim is to raise more funds so that we can roll out these kits to all the Primary schools in Carmarthenshire and make all schools safe if a serious bleed was to occur thus saving lives. Our vision is to have all schools receive a kit.
This venture is in conjunction with Heartbeat Trust UK.
