Junior Traders 2026 highlights young entrepreneurs across Carmarthenshire
8 hours ago
Primary school pupils were given the opportunity to showcase their entrepreneurial skills as part of the Junior Traders Competition 2026, with events held in Carmarthen, Llanelli and Ammanford between 13–15 May.
A total of 19 primary schools took part across the three market days, making this one of the most successful competitions to date. Pupils generated more than £8,500 in sales and over £6,400 in profit.
The standard of participation continues to rise, with schools demonstrating strong business planning skills and successfully taking ideas from concept to market.
In Carmarthen, Ysgol Trimsaran excelled, securing both the Best Presented Stall award and Highest Profit despite strong competition.
In Llanelli, the competition was particularly close, with just three points (out of a possible 108) separating the top three schools in the Best Presented Stall category. Ysgol Penygaer claimed the top prize, while Ysgol y Ffwrnes recorded the highest profit across all three events.
In Ammanford, Ysgol Penygroes was awarded Best Presented Stall. Although another school made a strong start with quick sales, underestimating stock levels meant they sold out early, allowing Ysgol Penygroes to also secure the Highest Profit award.
While trophies were awarded at each event, the achievements of all pupils were outstanding. Despite challenging weather conditions, participants showed resilience and creativity, making the most of every opportunity to attract customers and maximise sales.
The organisers would like to thank teaching staff across the county for their support in helping pupils take part in an experience that is both educational and enjoyable. Thanks also go to local dignitaries, partners and businesses who supported and judged the events.
Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet Member Rural Affairs, Communities, and Welsh Language, Cllr Carys Jones, said:
Once again, the Junior Traders Competition has shown the incredible talent, creativity and determination of our young people across Carmarthenshire. It is inspiring to see pupils developing real entrepreneurial skills, from planning and teamwork to customer engagement and financial awareness. These are valuable experiences that will benefit them far beyond the classroom.
I would like to congratulate every school that took part and thank the teachers, partners and organisers who continue to make this initiative such a success year after year.”
Special thanks go to Llanelli Town Council, Llanelli Community Partnership, Llanelli Chamber of Trade, Carmarthen Town Council, Carmarthen Chamber of Trade, Foothold Cymru, The Secret Plant House, Stori Cymru and Tea Traders. Equipment for the events was provided by Green Top Markets.
