Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet has agreed to adopt the Carmarthenshire Local Food Strategy and Action Plan which sets out ambitious plans to ensure that all people in Carmarthenshire can access local, healthy and sustainable food.

Following approval of the Strategy, progress will now be made for the delivery of the Action Plan led by the Carmarthenshire Public Services Board (PSB) to make the vision of creating “a Carmarthenshire Food System that produces, promotes and provides healthy and sustainable for future generations.”

The Strategy will work along three strands:

  • Food for Public Health – to ensure that everyone in Carmarthenshire has access to local, healthy and sustainable food
  • Public Sector Provision – that all public sector catering, education and provision services work collaboratively to prepare, serve and promote healthy and sustainable food
  • Local Food Economy - develop a thriving, innovative and resilient local food economy that retains value

Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Rural Affairs, Communities and Welsh Language, Cllr Carys Jones, said:

The Carmarthenshire Local Food Strategy has been developed with ambitious goals including that 30% of public sector food will be locally sourced and sustainable by 2030. The Strategy also aims to provide better access for residents of Carmarthenshire to vegetables and fruit and lower the consumption of foods that are processed or high in fat, salt or sugar and improve local food economy through the development of a strong and thriving Food industry.”
